Common Nebraska wildflower

Echinacea, common name coneflowers, are hardy prairie plants. The term Echinacea is derived from echinos, the Greek word for hedgehog because the center resembles one. They range from purple to white in the wild. Coneflowers bloom all summer and into fall. They are often planted in gardens because of their beauty and hardiness. Nurseries are cultivating hybrids in new colors.
